A'isha
(Allah be pleased with her) reported Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as saying:
"Five are the harmful things which should be killed in the state of Ihram
or otherwise: snake, speckled crow, rat, voracious dog, and kite"
The Black kites has the behavior of spreading fires by picking up
flaming twigs and take them to an unburnt area of grass and drop it in there to
set new blazes to scare animals like small birds, lizards and insects which
flee the grasslands. This is why black kites are nicknamed as 'fire hawks'.
Until 2018 it was thought the birds were just spreading fire by
accident, according to National Geographic.
Yet with further research into their behavior, it was found they
were intentionally spreading the fires for their own benefit.
A first-hand account of a sighting by Waipuldanya inspired Gosford
to co-author a 2017 report into the raptors in the Northern Territory
."I have seen a hawk pick up a smoldering stick in its claws
and drop it in a fresh patch of dry grass half a mile away, then wait with its
mates for the mad exodus of scorched and frightened rodents and reptiles. When
that area was burnt out, the process was repeated elsewhere. We call these
fires Jarulan," Waipuldanya said.
